BERTINGA 2017 IGT Toscana Rosso
The Bertinga vineyard stands on a high valley at about 420 metres above sea level and is divided into five parcels for a total of nine hectares. The calcareous and, in places, clayey soils are compact and heavy. Soils so precious that they baptise the wines that take shape here through the voices of Sangiovese and Merlot.
2017 was one of the driest years in decades. The first months of the year were variable, with some rain only in the latter part of February and March. Then a few late frosts, but from May onwards there was very little rainfall. Only sporadic thunderstorms occurred in some areas of the Chianti region in late spring. Added to this scarce rainfall was the constancy of temperatures always above the seasonal average, which in some periods, especially in July and August, reached very high peaks.
Production Area: Gaiole in Chianti
Vineyard: Bertinga
Grapes: 50% Sangiovese, 50% Merlot
Vinification and Ageing: the grapes were harvested by hand into 10 kg crates and the bunches were selected by hand on the sorting table.
The grapes of each variety were vinified separately and fermentation took place in steel and cement vats.
Ageing took place in Austrian oak tonneaux and French oak barriques for a period of approximately 18 months, followed by at least as many months in bottle before release.
Visual profile: ruby red, medium intense
Olfactory profile: the first nose is shy. It evokes Mediterranean spices, thyme, garrigue, red berries. In the opening, frank and subtle aromas appear, red pepper, paprika and black olives mingle with fruit aromas.
The palate is powerful and tight.
Taste profile: the sip is powerful and tight. The firm tannins provide structure. The wine is forthright and flowing, the tannins are soft on the palate and tight until the finish. The aromas are floral and subtle, evoking anise, bergamot and wild thyme.
